Pandas Race for 3rd Overall at PCL Champs: An O'Dea to Remember
The Pandas of Bonner & Prendie entered Belmont Plateau on Saturday, October 22nd, with a mission - to finish in the top 3 of the Catholic League. They knew this was not going to be an easy task with how well teams like Lansdale Catholic, Archbishop Carroll, Little Flower, and St. Hubert were performing this year. Those teams did not know the fire that was burning in the hearts of the Pandas since last cross country season.
Those who raced last year knew how it felt to fall to forth based on a technicality a year ago - they made they would never feel that way again. The Pandas proved why cross country is more of a team sport that an individual effort on Saturday. The girls had a spread of 1:48 between runners 1 to 5. This spread ensured a 3rd place finish for the Pandas, as they constantly worked together on the course. Lead by 1st Team All Catholic, Jenna Rastatter finishing fifteenth place, the rest of the pack quickly finished behind her one by one, each place being more important than the other.
The best surprise of the day for the Pandas was the finish of Bonner & Prendie senior, Bridie O'Dea. Bridie ran a minute faster than she ever did before to be the 2nd finishing member of the team. Her heroic race pushed members of her team to the finish line faster. Her leadership on Saturday went unmatched as she quickly made way past individuals to go Honorable Mention All Catholic.
Bridie was quickly followed in by freshman, Corrina O'Lock, who also finished Honorable Mention All Catholic. The impressive freshman continued her great rookie season at a very important time.
Then came Sam Gliwa, overcoming a torn meniscus early this season, Sam should up and raced with everything she had on Saturday, There was a constant fight in her because the junior knew this team needed her to run with heart.
Not to far from Sam was the Pandas number 5 runner, Charlotte McDermott. Charlotte continued to pass people in times of need, picking off one by one all the way to the finish line!
The number 6 and 7 runners also ran a very important race on Saturday. Freshman, Maggie Salter, and Sophomore, Hannah Bierling, had the important role of misplacing members on other teams to pick up more points for the Pandas. This is a role they took very seriously, as they knew the race could come down to how well they finished.
The Pandas finished 3rd overall, only beating Lansdale Catholic by 2 points. This is the best finish for the Pandas since the 2007 season, where the team also finished 3rd overall.
One the JV end, Briella Black finished 22nd overall, finishing the last mile of the race passing 4 people out of the woods to go for a medal! Shyann Bilbrough finished 28th overall, with Jasmin Williams running her personal best time on Saturday.
