Friars Turn Heads at PCL Champs
The comments made by a number of individuals at Lehigh University on Sunday were about how impressive the Friars of Bonner & Prendie looked. After all, a year ago the Friars took 5th at this event lead, mostly, by a strong distance program. This year, the Friars worked as a team and turned heads on the track and in the field.
On the track, the Friars were lead by Meet MVP, Ethan Cook, in their 4th place finish. Ethan’s impressive day started when he won the 60 dash by breaking the school record and hitting the state qualifying time, running 7.04 (0.01 faster than the former school record). That wasn’t enough for him. Ethan then came out in the 200 and hit another gear by taking down the state qualifying time there and winning the 200! As if that wasn’t enough, the senior knew his day wasn’t nearly over. Ethan followed up his two gold medals, with yet another gold medal. Ethan won the triple jump, earning him the meet MVP and turning him into a 3 time First Team All Catholic on the day!
Ethan’s leadership helped push his teammates and under classman to another level all in themselves. Dave Whitfield stepped up big time in the 400, finished 4th in the event and hitting the state qualifying guideline. That helped him also earn First Team All Catholic.
Junior, Alton McKenley, did something that surprised everyone in the meet! He hit a three feet personal best in the long jump, propelling him to 3rd overall and Second Team All Catholic standings.
Not to be topped by his classmate, Tony Harper flew on the last lap of his 3,000 moving from 7th to 3rd place and Second Team All Catholic honors. Tony would also spend his day hitting another personal best time in the mile, where he finished 6th place for Honorable Mention All Catholic honors.
Senior, Mike Larsen, entered his first Philadelphia Catholic League Championship ranked 8th in the shot put. Mike would surprise the field by walking away 5th overall and receive Honorable Mention All Catholic honors.
The 4x200, DMR, and 4x400 all played a pivotal part in the Friars 4th place finish at PCL Champs as well!
