Biography:
Mike "Chip" Cipollone graduated Monsignor Bonner's class of 1968. During his sophomore year at Bonner he was recruited to join the crew team by a fellow St. Denis parishioner saying he would be perfect as a coxswain. He rowed under Coach George Mattson while at Bonner. His sophomore year he was in a 3rd V8 and took gold at the Stotesbury regatta. His senior year at Bonner his boat was in a dead heat with another boat at Stotesbury and was awarded 2nd place.
In 1967 he went to Germany and won at Junior Nationals with Penn AC.
After Bonner Chip went Marietta College and won Gold at Dad Vails his senior year.
After college and going out to work plus starting a family he was away from the rowing community until around 1980. He went back to Penn AC and made the Masters as well a Dragon Boat which went to Beijing China.
Around this time Bonner crew was almost out of existence. Chip, along with some of the Penn AC coaches and members worked on bringing it back and even had Coach George Mattson. 1984 Coach Mattson asked Chip to take over because he had been ill and needed to retire from coaching. The following year Chip asked Dave Krmpotich to be the Bonner crew head coach and the rest is history.
Mike Cipollone is one of the most respected high school coxswain coach's in the sport. We can not thank him enough !!!
